Anna in her room, Warsaw 1983
My sister, Anna Ostrowska, was born in May 1961 in Warsaw, Poland, and her life concluded at the age of 54 in Rotterdam. She pursued graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and was immersed in the spirit of the "Polish School of Poster Design."
In 1986, immediately following her final exams, she emigrated to the Netherlands. Since then, she has worked as a freelance visual artist. It was in Holland where her professional journey unfolded, and she made significant contributions to the Dutch creative landscape, primarily as an illustrator. Her life was devoted to her craft - it always took precedence. There was little separation or room for other matters. She continued creating, not driven by career ambitions, but simply out of a deep personal need.
In the early '80s in Poland, during the initial years of her studies, Anna actively participated in political anti-government activities, engaging in strikes and supporting the opposition. She remained highly conscious, continuously analyzing societal changes and global transformations.
I miss her dearly, especially in these current times marked by a common atmosphere of anxiety. The memory of her calm and balanced demeanor brings a ray of confidence and a certain fearlessness. The expansive and enlightened perspective of her mind, coupled with an immense creative spirit and a warm heart, is a rare combination.
